The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was, without doubt, one of the most original aircraft in terms of aerodynamic design and layout of the Second World War. It was a revolutionary heavy fighter for the double-beam fuselage, in which the two engines were installed, with the pilot placed in an advanced cockpit in the center of the plane. Thanks to its two liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V-1710 12-cylinder engines of 1425 hp each, the P-38 reached a top speed of over 660 km / h. It was armed with four 12.7mm Browning machine guns. and a Hispano M2 cannon that guaranteed good firepower. Not very maneuverable compared to the single-engine fighters of the time but very robust and stable. Its strong point was a high flight autonomy very useful in the Pacific operational theater or in escort missions for long-range bombers over European skies. The P-38, due to its characteristic shape and its fearsome operational characteristics, was nicknamed by the enemy pilots "the two-tailed devil".
